The latest dog training rage is clicker dog training. A clicker ia a pocket-size rectangular plastic box with a metallic push button on top that clicks, thus the name clicker. It is a type of training that may - or may not - be right for your dog.
Investigators in dog studies think that the clicker encourages behavioral changes without having to resort to punishment! It works like this. We all know that whenever we perform something well and are then rewarded for it, we're likely to behave the same way again. A dog believes the same thing. Dogs learn through consequences. Whenever they behave in a specific fashion. and it garners them a reward along with praise, they'll want to duplicate the behavior over and over again since they like the consequence. Whenever they do something that you don’t approve of, and they are then ignored or reprimanded in a stern voice, they realize that they are not apt to get any treats and so are not likely to repeat the behavior again.
Clicker dog conditioning works in that it rewards positive behavior. Whenever your dog sits down, click and offer him a treat. The next time he sits down repeat the same only do not say anything to him. He should soon understand that whenever he sits down he will receive a reward as well as hear a click. So when you eventually click before he sits down - he recognizes he had better sit. Its fairly straight-forward if you think about it.
Punishment isn't employed with clicker dog training because researchers think that although punishment does halt a few bad behaviors, it's every bit as likely to produce a different undesirable behavior. Punishment is nearly always executed after the dog has finished something improper, therefore dogs interpret punishment as a random result. Consequently punishment does not actually resolve anything. Dogs really do live "in the here and now".
Clicker dog training isn't exclusively used on dogs! It is widely utilized for different animals like dolphins as well as horses. It's a widely used training method and does bring about solutions; if carried out the right way.
