House Training Your Dog

By Marian

House training is unique for every puppy. Some breeds are high strung and will have a problem potty training. It is impairative that your dog start potty training as soon as possible.

We had an American Eskimo puppy. Each time my brother came home the puppy would get wound up and pee on the carpet. This had to stop. We decided to take the dog out an hour before he came home. It did not work so it was decided to make it a half an hour before he came in. It was decided to use the crate method. We had a winner.

My friend Kathy had a poodle that had a different problem with potty training. The dog went where ever it wanted to go. They used an empty little kiddie pool to contain the poodle when they were not watching. It worked very well at first. The dog could not get out of the kiddie pool but soon learned how to pull the stem of the pool out to deflate it. They had to keep him in the bathroom where there was no carpeting.

Many methods for training have been developed over the years. Some are good and others not. One technique that is not recommended is finding an accident on the floor and yelling at your dog. This just leads to confusion for your dog. It is ok if the dog is in the act of going potty where you do not want them to go. It is then acceptable to say no loudly or clap to stop the dog from going. After he stops and you take him where you want him to go. You need to praise him when he goes there.

Hitting your dog is never recommended. This can create fear and neverousness in your dog. The dog may not trust or come to you.

A very old way of dealing with accidents around the house was to put the dogs nose in it. This is not effective at all. The dog gets no cues from this activity. It will not help the problem at all.

Modern methods of potty training and being kind and having patience will help in the sucess of potty training your puppy.

Horse Training An Exciting Career

By Heidi Edris

Ask yourself the following questions in order to decide whether horse training is right for you

1. Do you like horses and if it is horse training that you really want to do? 2. Have you taken part in horse shows and been to or watched any horse races? 3. Do you want to learn new information about the kinds of horse feeds on the market, as well as find out the required dietary allowance for each type of horse? 4. Would you enjoy grooming horses every day? 5. Would you mind talking to them? Horses obey more through human contact, especially the human voice, this is from the studies made. 6. Are you an encouraging person? 7. Do you have leadership quality? 8. Are you willing to put tacks or harnesses on the horse in order for them to be used to the tools? 9. Do you mind riding the horses and observing their behavior with each temperament when asked? 10. Are you going to be patient when training them?

These are the ten basic questions that are often asked by horse training instructors to those who wish to be around horses. Being around horses can be very dangerous. Due to that reason alone, it is only fair that the aspiring horse trainer is there because of his free will.

Usually when the owners have chosen the trainer to handle their beloved horses they would like them to be able to stop the horses from kicking, resisting grooming and bolting every time their reins aren't secured. Horse training as a career is no different from other career, they come with some expectations.

You must know you job as a horse trainer even before you choose horse training as your career. Therefore when answering the ten questions, answer truthfully. As a horse trainer you are responsible to teach the riding, driving and racing techniques to the horse. If you can bestow the horse the knowledge, the plan training as well as the techniques, you are doing your job well as a horse trainer. The owners have the option to pay independent operators or have their horses put at a training school. Whatever their choice, horse trainers are in demand.

Some horse trainers pair up a stallion to a mare, depending on the horse type, in order to come up with a good breed of foal, this is done by horse trainers who are knowledgeable about the mating of horses. Of course it is a good investment because the finer the breed of the horse, the more expensive they are. Everyone knows how much a horse costs.

Horse training as a career can be a good choice which will give you good returns but you must love what you are doing. That is the bottom line.

Good and Simple Dog Training Aids

By John Savage

Training your dog is no easy task; any pet owner can tell you that. While many dogs are very eager to please their owners, the bottom line is that they really don't always understand what it is that you are saying and they have very, very short attention spans. These factors can make things difficult for even the most patient of owners, but before you are tempted to throw in the towel, let us consider some simple and basic dog training aids that you can use to help you along the way.

One of the best dog training aids that you can employ is to emphasize rewarding your dog for what he or she does right rather than simply punishing your dog when he or she does something wrong. Dogs crave attention and approval from their owners and will do just about anything to get it. If you want your dog to learn potty training, reward her when she goes in the right spot in the yard just as much as you scold her for going anywhere else. Many people neglect to include this positive reinforcement as part of their dog training aids arsenal, but that approval and affection can go a long way toward getting your dog to do what you want her to do!

Are there any training aids that we can purchase in order to help us with our dogs behaviour? Yes there are a number, and a visit to your local pet store will be quite an eye opener. Some of course are much better than others, as you would expect. Take for example dog leads. Nowadays, the experts tell us that choke chains and collars are not a good idea because they are of little benefit when training, but, a good study lead and collar on the other hand can work wonders when trying to get your dog to obey an instruction. Muzzles are another aid, not something that I like, but some people say that it help control a dogs barking both indoors and out.

Another weapon in your arsenal of dog traing aids is the good old fashioned grooming brush. Most dogs just love the time when they are groomed, and they also love having a toy to play with. Give them a chewy top and you will keep them happy for hours, and they won't be looking to chew the furniture or get up to mischief. Another basic aid is you, yes, your playing with your dog is not only great fun for both of you, but it will make sure that he or she has little energy left to get into trouble. It does not cost anything to play, so make sure you do.

A final word to say about bathing your dog. They can be trained from an early age to enjoy this providing you use the right equipment. The shampoo that you use needs to be dog shampoo, not human shampoo, and a conditioner is helpful in order to making the combing activity easier later. Have a good size towel handy, and if necessary a leash in order to restrain them. You can make this an enjoyable activity for both of you providing as I said earlier, you start at an early age.

Whose dog is it anyway?

By Jonethan Bass

So, it's seven o'clock in the morning under gray skies and pounding rain, and you're out there pounding the pavement with the family dog so he can do his business. Leash in one hand, plastic bag in the other; you move along slowly as the cold rain seeps down the back of your neck. Meanwhile, your dog doesn't seem to care about the weather, he's just enjoying the smells.

Sounds familiar, doesn't it?

Dogs don't always pay a lot of attention to what people say; they focus on how they say it and more importantly what they do. It doesn't matter who says they're the dog's owner, that doesn't make it so.

Your dog will connect with whoever takes the most care of him. He sees who feeds him and who gets up in the dark to get beaten by the rain to let him outside. He notices who cleans up his messes that he has left, too!

They also see who makes time for them, and who brushes them off.

So if you plan on getting a dog for your children you need to take this into account because if you are the one taking care of this dog then the dog is going to be your pet - not your child's.

Remember the story of Lassie and his boy? They were inseparable. Just like owner and dog should be. If your child is not going to take the time to bond with his pet, his pet is not going to take the time to bond with him!

If your child simply tolerates the dog it is all the dog will do for him! So make sure everybody is willing to put their time in to caring for him.

Potty Training Your Puppy

By Joseph Then

Let's face it. Many of us enjoy a little companion therefore, some of us keep puppies as pets. But most of us dread having pets as we may think that we are going to burden ourselves with more responsibility. Some of us think that potty training your puppy is a hassel. Let me tell you one important thing; it is best to potty train your puppy while it is still young as when you train it when it is older, you need to get rid of its old habits. These are some ways in which you can potty train your beloved puppy. Read on if you want to find out more.

We shall start by understanding the basics. One thing to note; a new-born is not ready for potty training. The ideal age would be three months.

First Rule: Remember to keep your puppy's meal on a regular schedule. You can take your pet out after he is done with his meal. You can also take out your pet after nap, before his bedtime, or when he whimpers during the night.

Second Rule: You should only feed your puppy and give him a little water when you can take him outside after eating. As much as possible do not give water to your puppy two hours before sleeping. In this way you help prevent accidents through the night.

Third Rule: Your puppy must be tired after playing around. Therefore, you should bring it out on a walk on a leash. This would give your puppy a hint that it's time to relieve himself.

Fourth Rule: You should try to bring your puppy to the same spot to relieve itself. This way your puppy can recognoze the area and will try its best to relieve itself at the same spot.

Fifth Rule: What you can do is that you can try training your dog by saying a something to him. If you do this often enough, your puppy will be able to take the cue to relieve himself on your command.

Last: I am sure you like rewards. Well, same goes for you puppy too. You should reward or praise your puppy if he relieves himself outside or followed your instructions on potty training.

You cannot expect the potty training session to be perfect. I am sure you will encounter unforeseen circumstances. Well, here are some ways to deal with them.

If you catch your pet relieving itself at a place it is not supposed to, firstly, you should not scream or yell. Gently nudge your pet to go outside and after this continue the reward thing by praising your puppy.

I am sure it is frustrating seeng the mess left behind by your pet but you need to stay calm and clean up the mess. After that you should continue the potty training routine that you have made up. After cleaning put the soiled cleaning materials outdoors or where your puppy usually relieves himself, making it easier for your pet to recognize where he should go in the future.

So, what are you waiting for? Use this knowledge that you have acquired and put it to the test. All you need to do is to remember to stick to your schedule and soon, your puppy will get used to it.

Dog Behavior Questions - Is Your Behavior Ruining Your Training?

By Lee Dobbins

Contrary to popular belief there are not as many training styles as there are trainers and one of the most interesting dog behavior questions that arise is how the trainers attitude affects the training process. The despite an individual differences people handling dogs fall into clearly recognizable categories. And no matter your an individual style or that of your dog there remain certain truisms.

Training your dog is one of the most difficult and possibly frustrating tasks you can undertake. The only activity that requires more patience is raising human children. Many people don't have enough patience in themselves to train their dogs. Therefore, while you are training your dog, you may have to train yourself to be patient as well.

When training your dog, keep in mind that daily sessions are needed to reinforce the desired behavior you want. Half an hour to an hour time slots will be most rewarding. Remember that no matter how much time has gone by, if you are starting to lose your control or your patience you must end your training session.

Strive to length that 'time to boiling point' a little an each day. Remind yourself you are dealing with a dog. Even the most an easily trained breeds or individual dogs an understand at roughly the level of an average two-year old persons. Of course there are those rare an exceptions.

In nature, dogs live in a hierarchical social structure, and many dog behavior questions can be answered by this. In their society, there is typically 1 leader in the "pack" - the alpha dog. In your house, you are the leader of the back. You must remember this when training and not let the dog take a leadership role.

When giving commands, be firm, but do not yell. Do not get angry with your dog when they do not obey. Rather than becoming frustrated with your dog, persist in your practice. Also, do not let the dog become the alpha of your pack. Your goal in training should not be to stroke your ego or to feel like you have power over your dog. The goal should be to have a safer environment for your dog and your family.

Teaching your dog to listen may not be easy. Your dog may be a natural alpha and may not want to take orders. However, it is possible. In wild packs of dogs, the role of alpha will change among pack members when one becomes more assertive than the current alpha. Consistently act as a leader to your dog and repeat these training techniques, and your dog will learn to respect you as alpha and will follow your commands.

No matter how well you train your dog, your dog still has a mind of its own and won't always follow the commands you issue. You and your dog will get frustrated if you expect him to learn a command with too few repetitions or to always perfectly follow one that you taught him before. Your dog does not have the same memory as a human. It is even different from very young humans. Get to know your dog. Acknowledge your dog's unique qualities, his learning capability, and any limitations he may have.

Remember when training your dog to take his breed into consideration along with his age. All dogs are unique and have their own personality. You need to work with your dogs traits whether he is naturally lazy, inattentive, or a youthful pup.

Working against your dog's nature is never a good idea. Treat your dog kindly, but firmly and work at building his trust and training will be a good experience for both of you!

Start With These Basic Dog Training Techniques

By Lee Dobbins

You have to know some basic dog training techniques to effectively communicate with your dog and train him. Although man has been interacting with dogs for centuries sometimes communication between the two can be confusing.

In order to avoid human frustration and canine misbehavior, when training dogs consider these factors. Remember that while, dogs understand and respond at roughtly the mental level of a human two year old, their senses are very different from humans. For instance, their color vision has a different response pattern to reds and greens. Additionally, their minds process information different from humans. And obviously, of course, their noses are much more sensitive than that of human. Keeping these thoughts in mind will make the task of dog training much easier.

By instinct, dogs are still pack animals. They are actually descended from wolves, also pack animals, who are social animals and work best within a hierarchy where all members interact with each other appropriately.

Training can start as early as possible. For some breeds, four weeks is a good time to start. For the first several months, you should allocate at least thirty minutes per day, though a full hour is preferred, for training.

While housebreaking your dog is a bit more complicated (and we will discuss this in another article), there are a few basic dog training techniques that all training should follow.

When training your dog, you want to make it clear that you are the dominant one as early as possible. Dogs are pack animals by nature, and every pack has a natural pecking order. The top dog is the alpha. It is followed by the beta dog and so on. If you want sanity in your household and you want a happy dog who knows where he stands, you need to step up and be the alpha of his pack.

Depending on the breed of the dog, or sometimes the individual dog, the training technique that is used will be either more difficult or possibly easier. Some dogs are more outgoing, similar to humans. Attitude is what counts the most, though training tools like collars and leashes, and commands are also useful. Your dog should never be allowed to think he is in charge.

You shouldn't have to use physical force to project your dominance. There are times when this may be necessary, though, it must be properly used. On a normal basis, patience and firmness are all that is needed to properly train your dog.

For puppies, try placing them into a position of submission when they are still young. Roll them onto their backs, and put your hand firmly in the middle of the chest. When they lower their paws, this signals a sigh of submission. You can go further by placing your face directly in front of theirs, emulating dominant dog behavior.

Begin with a short leash so you can keep the dog from pulling you all over the place. Let the dog have lots of time to run off his energy outside of training, but don't tolerate that kind of behavior or hyperactivity during training sessions.

Start by using short, clear commands which sound distinctly different such as sit, stay, down or come. Use a firm tone of voice but do not be harsh. Stay in charge of the situation but do not show anger. Avoid double word commands such as 'sit down' or 'stay down' because they sound too similar and can easily confuse the dog.

Use the same tone, look and hand gesture with each verbal command. Eventually these can be used independently of one another. It is essential, however to provide the simplest, most consistent form of communication when beginning the training.

Remember that dogs have a word understanding roughly equal to a toddler so you need to keep your meanings simplistic. For example, don't use the verbal command "Down" to mean lay down as well as to indicate not to jump. This will just confuse your dog - stick to 1 meaning per word.

These dog training techniques combined with your patience and persistence will pay off in spades with a dog that is obedient and a fun to be around. Using these techniques will give you a better sense of understanding for your pet and will become a base of communication for a lifetime of friendship.

Obedience Training:Pass The Biscuits , I'll Take Ten

By Marian

Obedience training is very important for your dog and you, it creates trust and a bond between your you and your pet. Dog and puppy training is not as hard as people think. In fact anyone can do it even a kitty can be trained by a dog or visa-versa.

My Grandmother, who was affectionately called Nana by everyone, was an animal lover. If she had no pets of her own she adopted every dog and cat in the neighborhood. But at this time she had pets. She had a little white untrimmed poodle named Peggy and a big red cat named Buddy Boy. All her red cats were Buddy something or something Buddy. She was particularly fond of red cats. To her, there were cats, then there were RED cats.

For a time she did not know why there were dog biscuits around all four legs of the dining room table. She could not figure out how this was possible. Each time she put the biscuits back in the box they would mysteriously appear around the table legs.

She was getting upset thinking that her children were the guilty ones. To discover the truth she waited around the kitchen, behind the door. There were no takers for her trap.

One day she caught the criminal duo in the act. Nana was washing dishes. The dog biscuits were kept under the sink. There sneaking up to the sink was Buddy Boy, her orange cat. He reached into the box of treats. Pulled out a biscuit and handed it to Peggy, the poodle. She ran into the dining room. Deposited her biscuit then went back to the kitchen sink ready to receive another.

Buddy Boy was well trained. If a dog and a cat can train each other. You should have no difficulty training your dog.

You can try many methods of obedience training. What works best will depend on your dog.

When training your dog food is sometimes best. There are dogs that enjoy a toy or affection over treats.

Which ever method of obedience training you decide on can be successful as long as you are patient and stick with the program.

He Doesn't Always Have to go to a Groomer

By Jonethan Bass

Dog grooming parlors are everywhere, and it's no surprise to anyone. Anyone who has ever known more than one or two dog owners has met at least one who is willing to spend more money on their dog than some people spend on their children. So why not spend that money on grooming?

Of course, your dog deserves pampering and grooming.

Well yes, your dog does deserve the best care you can provide, and there is no reason why occasional trips to the groomer can't be part of that.

Although you may make occasional trips to the dog groomer a habit in your dog's life it does not mean that you should only have the groomer hold all of the responsibility. That can actually become a poor choice.

After all, the groomer is more experienced in the area of grooming your dog than you are, right? Don't most of us car owners allow mechanics to take care of the maintenance of our cars - why not let the groomers handle our dogs grooming needs?

Your relationship with your car is one-sided, unlike the one with your dog which is emotional.

Sure you hear lots of people talking about how they "love" their cars, and some of them probably even believe it, but it's not the same kind of relationship you have with your dog. For one thing, the emotional bond between driver and car is not reciprocal.

No matter what you do, your car isn't going to love you, and you won't hurt its feelings.

The difference is your dog. Take care of and spend lots of time with your dog and your relationship with him can be very strong and well off. It is important because if you take the time to love and groom him you can actually help to instill behavior that is good!

Take the time, your dog is worth it.
