The German Shepherds Beauty|, Brains and Brawn

By Chris Howard

Right off the bat a German Shepherd dog exhibits an air of dexterity and power. It is a beautifully lustrous pet, full of life and energy. Elongated rather than tall, the German Shepherd is full-bodied and smooth-curved, giving an overall positive sense of muscular fitness and health.

When you see one of the members of this breed, you are struck right away by their stately stance. The German Shepherd is a coolly aloof dog, showing subtle confidence and poise, and does not make friends with strangers easily. It is straightforward and bold, but is known for its disciplined nature.

This dog is matchless when it comes to securing, and is a terrifically loyal member of the family once adopted, a perfect selection for families that want a good investment when deciding on an animal. As soon as its trust in its owner is made and a firm understanding and relationship is acknowledged, the German Shepherd is quite affectionate with children. This dog is the right selection to make if you want an animal that is intelligent, faithful and vigorous, all at the same time.

The breed was named Deutscher Schferhund, literally translating to "German Shepherd Dog". It was named for its main purpose of assisting shepherds in herding and protecting sheep. They were bred to preserve traits that assisted in their job of heading sheep and protecting flocks from predators, as this was practical in Germany's local communities, during the 1800s.

Shepherds would choose and breed animals that they believed had the traits necessary for herding sheep, such as cleverness, agility, and keen senses of smell. The outcome produced dogs that performed their task excellently, but differed in appearance and ability, depending on which locality they came from. This practice was begun in the 1800s.

This breed is identified with its quickness for training and its zeal to have goals and duties. Stemming from its intrinsic qualities that make it a faithful guardian and herder, the German Shepherd is regarded as the best breed choice when it comes to police, military and guard work. Whats more, its a devoted friend of the family, a herder, and a top-notch show competitor.

When the word working dog is used, the image of a German Shepherd and its roles in helping police track down lawbreakers, guarding facilities, and patrolling troubled areas comes to mind. They're absolutely helpful in search and rescues, cadaver searches, and narcotics and explosives detection, to quote just several uses. Their keen noses and unique ability to work in busy, distracting environments like airports or shopping malls allows them to do all this.

The German Shepherd has a calm, alert, and intelligent face, and his fur has a wide variety of colors, the most common being red and black or tan and black. Their dense, close outer coat covers a thick undercoat and a bushy tail that comes up to the hock. Because this animal emanates firmness and a quiet energy, choose the German Shepherd when looking for a faithful protector and a loving companion: He is one of the most intelligent, hardworking and agile dogs in the world.
