What distinguishes Bernese Mountain dogs from other dogs is that not only do they serve as plain guards, playmates, or farm dogs alone, but they can be all of these-- and more. This breed may look meek and behave sweetly but don't get fooled. Even though they can captivate you with their gracefully long, smooth black hair, they can also protect you, aid you, and gambol with you.
Bernese Mountain dogs are such sweet and loving creatures but would you believe that in the earlier part of the 20th century they almost got extinct? What if they never got rescued? If thats so we would've never known a cattle herder, milk hauler, farm dog, and family watchdog of the Alps.
Can you imagine the dog breeding world without these gentle mountain dogs? If this breed never got rescued we would've never known a cute black-furred mountain dog, a fun playmate, and a brave companion. There would've no BMD in North America today or in any place around the world.
The Bernese Mountain dog or BMD is believed to be a cross breed of some mountain dogs that originally came from Rome. When Romans entered Switzerland, they had with them this farm dog and cattle herd extraordinaire. From then on, this breed served their masters very well until presumably their near extinction.
When some breed enthusiasts discovered the abilities of these dogs and realized the ignorance of their owners, they made an effort to rescue them and so they took them to Berne, a village in Switzerland. At that place and time, the breed flourished and was called the Bernese Mountain dog or simply, Berner. In 1926, Berner finally arrived in the United States.
To this day, BMDs are still the mountain dogs of the Alps in Switzerland. However, in the United States, this dog is a spoiled companion. They have a natural affinity with children so they make good playmates and safe pets.
Pure breeds of Berenese Mountain dogs are hard to find and cost much in the US. If you have time and money to spare, however, this breed is worth it. With its elegant features and good abilities, you can surely conclude that this dog is worth the price.
Compared to other breeds, we can say that Bernese Mountain dogs are the only ones who can be safe playmates and intelligent companions while looking so serene and beautiful at the same time. Catching a glimpse of them from a distance, one can't help but be mesmerized by their gentleness and radiant beauty. To know that they nearly faced extinction, we can only be thankful to those breeders who braved on rescuing them then.
