Trying To Stop Dog Chasing? What You Can Do

By Andyl Hannerl

If you want to become a dog owner, you have to be prepared to deal with many dog behavior problems. These common problems include digging, barking as well as jumping on other people.

There is no best way to solve these issues except to prevent them before they even happen. In order to accomplish that, start training your dog when he is still a puppy. You want them to be obedient and exhibit the proper behavior with consistent reinforcement.

Another training issue that sometimes comes up is to stop dog chasing since it can be dangerous to the dog as well as the individuals involved. There are different methods to use to stop dog chasing and preventing this issue requires that the individual be consistent with whatever method he chooses to use.

Prevention

One way to stop dogs from chasing cars is to never allow the dog to be outside without supervision and a leash. Dogs should never be allowed to run freely outside since they endanger themselves and others when they come near the road.

If you are living in a rural area where there are not a lot of cars around, you might think it is alright to let your dog outside. Well, that is not true. No matter what, you still want to train your dog to stay within its territory. You do not want your dog to run onto the road and result in accidents. Doing so will also help to stop your dog from chasing other people that come near the dog's territory.

By allowing the dog to chase other people or creatures, it can result in harm for both the dogs and the ones being chased. In fact, this will also cultivate aggressive behavior in a dog, which is what you as a dog owner wants to avoid.

If your dog is chasing you or trying to play with you, you should never give your dog any reinforcement of that kind of behavior. Yes, playing chase might be quite fun but the drawback is, this will result in aggressive behavior in your dog as well as chasing behavior. Not a good idea certainly.

In order to stop chasing behavior in your dog, don't ever run away from your dog when it is chasing you. What you should do instead is to back face your dog and refuse to give him any attention when it is trying to chase you. Only when the dog calm down do you start giving him attention and praising him.

Another way to help to reinforce good behavior and stop dog chasing is to tell the dog to sit when it is starting the chase behavior. When the dog sits, the owner should give it attention so that the positive behavior is reinforced and the negative behavior is avoided.
